Chingleput or Chengalpattu or Chengalpet is a municipality in Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu state. Chingleput derives from its name ‘Chen’gazhu-neer-pattu’ in Tamil, meaning is Chingleput has water body that surrounds it containing ‘red lilies’
Chingleput is located on the Palar River about 56 km south-southwest of the city of Chennai (Madras). Chingleput was formerly a capital of the kings of Vijayanagara. Chingleput is on the way to Mamallapuram, Thirukazhukundram and Kanchipuram.
Kolavai Lake
The main attraction in Chengalpattu is the Kolavai Lake. Kolavai Lake is the second Largest Lake in the Kanchipuram District after the Madhuranthagam Lake. Kolavai Lake is well known for its perenniality which has no records of going dry in summer.
Chennai & Chengalpattu is getting water from Kolavai Lake during summar. The sad part is Kolavai Lake is now being polluted due to the rapid urbanization of Chengalpattu.
Vallam
Sri Vedantha Eswar & Sri Karivardha Raja Perumal temple is situated at vallam village near Chengalpet. Vallam village is around 2 kilometers from Chengalpet, on the way to Thirukalukundram.
