Thamirabarani, the perunniel river flows through Tirunelveli & Tuticorin districts of the Tamil Nadu state of southern India. This river is originates from a peak in hills of the Western Ghats above Papanasam in the Ambasamudram taluk.

Falls on the Way
Panatheertham Falls
This river has 3 water falls one is Panatheertham or Vanatheertham starting Point of Thamirabarani River. This falls is situated in the upper dam of Papanasam called kariyar dam. To reach the falls one has to travel 3 km boat journey from the upper dam of papanasam. Tamilnadu tourism board will operate boats to reach this falls. The famous ‘Cinna, Cinna Asai’ song in ‘Roja’ tamil film directed by maniratnam shooted in this falls.
Agasthiyar
Agasthiyar falls this is situated in the lower dam of papanasam. Round the year i.e., 365 days water will flow.
Kalyana Theertham
On top of the Agasthiyar falls, Kalyana theertham another small falls is there. A small siva temple also available here. if you walk a few more meters above Agasthiar falls one can find its source Kalyana theertham where you see a huge wall kind of structure and the falls originates behind the wall…. so the entire origination of the falls is hidden by the wall.. and the wall is not built its a natural rock!!….. This is the place where its believed that Agasthiar a poet who was travelling south to balance the earth due to the havoc created by the crowd that gathered at Lord Shiva’s marriage at Himalaya’s got to see the marriage ceremony live though his vision. Agasthiar was 4 feet tall and Lord Shiva choosed him to walk to Podhigai to balance the imbalance created by the crowd.

Thamirabarani contains copper, hence its name (Thamiram means copper in Tamil). The river has also been historically known as Porunai.
